Sighting in Tours, February 1, 2025

Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on February 1, 2025 in Tours (Indre-et-Loire, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At around 4:05 pm, a time confirmed during the investigation, the witness was in their garden. Looking up, they noticed a spherical object that seemed to spin on itself. It moved in a straight line, with no noise, no trail and no other visual or sound effect. Its shade alternated regularly between white and dark. It kept to its straight path until it vanished behind a large tree.

The witness was the only person to see the phenomenon and supplied a video, which could be used to extract the movement characteristics of the object. GEIPAN rated the consistency of the case as fairly good. What made the sighting strange was a sphere turning on itself and shifting regularly between white and black.

The information gathered during the investigation and the analysis of the video pointed toward a Mylar-type balloon carried by the wind: the steady motion, the alternating reflections of sunlight, the lack of noise and a path consistent with the wind's direction and speed all fitted this explanation. 1 February was a Saturday, a day when festive events or gatherings are common, but the origin of the balloon, whether released on purpose or lost, was not identified. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable observation of a Mylar balloon carried by the wind.
