Sighting in Valady, August 12, 2009

Aveyron, Occitanie, France

Sighting on August 12, 2009 in Valady (Aveyron, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At about 5:05 p.m., a motorist who was driving briefly spotted an object ahead, roughly 20° above a hill. It was oval, light silvery-grey and slightly shiny. It vanished very quickly behind the hill. No other witness account was collected.

The investigation noted that the witness, drawing on experience in astronomical observation, described and located the object with great precision. The account is consistent, but the sighting was too short to judge properly how unusual the object was. Balloons or aircraft are possible explanations, but the available information does not allow them to be checked. GEIPAN classified the case as C because of the lack of data on the object, of independent witnesses and of cross-checking.
