Sighting in Valloire, August 12, 2013

Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on August 12, 2013 in Valloire (Savoie, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).

What happened

During the night, between about 11:15 pm and 11:33 pm, a witness saw a strong light on a mountainside. It glowed with a slow, irregular flicker. It was close to a spot that is very hard to reach, which surprised the witness. Gradually the light lost intensity and then disappeared.

The GEIPAN investigation noted that the area is one of human activity, since it gives access to the Valmenier chairlifts. The colour and look of the light are typical of a flashlight. GEIPAN concluded that the witness most probably saw a powerful lamp being used by one or several people on site, near the chairlift facilities. The case was classified B: very probably a powerful flashlight.
