Sighting in Venizel, June 30, 2011

Aisne, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on June 30, 2011 in Venizel (Aisne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

A witness and their spouse were driving when they noticed, several times, a flying object moving across the sky. Its flashing lights and low altitude caught their attention. They heard no particular noise during the sighting.

The investigation found that the witness's description fits the appearance of a helicopter flying at night. Recent helicopters are far quieter than conventional ones. The Section Aérienne de Gendarmerie in Amiens, which is equipped with these newer helicopters, confirmed it had been flying in the area that day, but could no longer say exactly what route it had followed that night. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable observation of a helicopter.
