Sighting in Vernoux-en-Vivarais, February 25, 1975

Ardèche, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on February 25, 1975 in Vernoux-en-Vivarais (Ardèche, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a celestial body (star or planet) (class A).

What happened

Two witnesses saw a scintillating, circular-shaped light on several evenings in a row, under a clear sky. Some of these sightings were made through a telescope.

The investigation checked the sky for that period. From 17 February 1975, Jupiter and Venus were in conjunction and could be seen together, then gradually moved apart. The twinkling of these two bodies accounts for the rest of what was seen through the telescope, including the apparent movements and the color changes.

GEIPAN concluded that the witnesses had misidentified these celestial objects, and the case was classified A (identified).
