Sighting in Vienne, May 14, 1979

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on May 14, 1979 in Vienne (Isère, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At around 1 p.m., several people noticed a shiny object in a clear, windless sky. It was oval and silver in colour. It moved slowly along a north-south path, swaying as it went, and gradually lost height.

Because it seemed to be falling behind a hill, one of the witnesses set off to look for it. That person then saw the object climb quickly and vanish. The witnesses heard no noise at all.

The GEIPAN classified the case as B: the witnesses most likely saw a balloon, although this explanation could not be formally proven.
