Sighting in Vierzon, June 29, 2014

Cher, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on June 29, 2014 in Vierzon (Cher, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).

What happened

At around 9:30 p.m., a witness noticed a white object crossing the sky in a straight line and could not tell what it was. They could see no wings, no condensation trail and no lights on it. Throughout the sighting they heard a dull noise. They took a photo with their phone.

The investigation accounted for each of these points. A missing condensation trail is not unusual, since it depends on the humidity and temperature of the air at the aircraft's altitude. At sunset, a high-flying aircraft is lit from the side. The underside of the wings stays in shadow and looks darker than the bright blue sky, so only the lit fuselage can be seen from the ground, appearing cigar-shaped. In addition, the flashing anti-collision lights of an aircraft at high altitude are never visible from the ground in daylight. Flightradar data showed a north-to-south flight at that moment, an Airbus A320 operating the Paris-Toulouse route, which matches the sighting.

The GEIPAN classified the case as A: an airliner seen at sunset.
