Sighting in Wiwersheim, June 12, 2011

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on June 12, 2011 in Wiwersheim (Bas-Rhin, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 1:26 a.m., in the night between Saturday and Sunday, two witnesses were surprised to see a very bright yellow-red ball moving quickly across the sky. The object followed a straight path, and no particular sound was heard as it passed. The sighting lasted about three minutes.

The investigation considered the case to be of low strangeness but the testimony to be consistent. Elevation data were missing, probably because the witnesses misunderstood the question about the object's "height in the sky". The account has all the characteristics of a mistaken sighting of a Thai lantern. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable sighting of a Thai lantern.
