Sighting in Ajaccio, December 14, 1976

France

Sighting on December 14, 1976 in Ajaccio (France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a balloon (class A).

What happened

Between 1:15 and 1:27 a.m., a motorist noticed an unusual glow above the airport. It was an intensely white ball moving slowly sideways, followed by a second ball. The two spheres first came to a standstill, then rose rapidly into the sky and disappeared.

The gendarmerie investigation established that the witness had watched the release of a weather balloon. Everything they reported matched the balloon's maneuvers exactly, and GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A, meaning the phenomenon was identified.
