Sighting in Angers, October 30, 1996

Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on October 30, 1996 in Angers (Maine-et-Loire, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

In October 2010, the GEIPAN received a report from a person describing something they had seen fourteen years earlier, at the end of October 1996, at around 9 p.m. The witness did not remember the exact date, so 30 October was chosen arbitrarily. At the time the witness was 11 years old and was with their mother and younger brother. The three of them first noticed three stationary lights above the trees of a square.

The witness later described the phenomenon as a triangle with a black circle at its centre. It moved, then vanished in a blindingly fast acceleration. The sighting lasted about 20 seconds and no sound was heard. The mother also remembered an observation made in autumn 1996, at around 8 p.m.: an unusual light and a moving craft that she did not recognise. No other witness accounts were collected.

The description was too vague, with an incomplete date, and the event too old for the GEIPAN to investigate or reach a conclusion. The case was classified C because of insufficient information.
