Sighting in Ballon, September 20, 2015
Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, France
Sighting on September 20, 2015 in Ballon (Sarthe, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a reflection or photographic artefact (class A).
What happened
During a heritage open day, a witness was visiting a castle keep and took several photos of the site, including one of the landscape seen through the panes of a window. At the time, nothing unusual caught their attention. Back home, while looking through the pictures, they noticed three very sharp bright points standing out against the blue sky in the landscape shot. When they enlarged the image, each point turned out to be a cluster of six bright dots arranged in a hexagon, making three identical groups. No one had seen anything directly, and no other testimony was collected.
Analysis of the series of photos showed that the dots were the reflection in the glass of one of the groups of LED light fittings that were switched on in the room where the witness stood when taking the pictures. An on-site investigation confirmed that these lights existed and made it possible to reproduce the effect photographically. GEIPAN classified the case as A: the witness had mistaken the reflection of light fittings located behind them for something in the sky.
