Sighting in Beaulieu, August 20, 2013

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on August 20, 2013 in Beaulieu (Isère, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At 10:40 p.m., three people noticed an orange light passing silently across the sky. It looked like an orange ball and moved from the northwest toward the southeast. A video of the sighting exists.

GEIPAN investigators compared this movement with weather records from Grenoble and Lyon, which showed a steady wind from the north, consistent with the direction observed. The video fits the Thai lantern hypothesis fully. Such lanterns are more often released on weekends, but summer parties on weekdays are not unusual, and the sighting took place on a Tuesday. The case, regarded as having very little strangeness, is classified B: probable sighting of a Thai lantern.
