Sighting in Beaumont-sur-Sarthe, March 22, 2025

Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on March 22, 2025 in Beaumont-sur-Sarthe (Sarthe, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a reflection or photographic artefact (class A).

What happened

At around 2 a.m., the witness was driving when they noticed a glow in the sky, which they described as "a small patch of fog on the move." To stay focused on the road, they quickly stopped watching it. A few minutes later, back at home, they saw the phenomenon again and tried to film it. In the video, an object enters the frame about eleven seconds into the recording. The witness described it as looking like a drone.

GEIPAN rated the case's consistency as medium. There was only one witness and one usable video, but no data could be gathered about the glow seen with the naked eye from the car: the answers to the GEIPAN questionnaire concerned only the phenomenon that was filmed. The first sighting therefore could not be identified, and the analysis was limited to the video footage.

Analysis of the video with the IPACO software showed that the luminous phenomenon was a stray reflection created inside the lens by the strong brightness of a street lamp in the field of view. Its apparent movement came from the witness's phone moving during the recording. Intrigued by what they had seen from the vehicle, the witness linked the two observations, despite clear differences between them. GEIPAN classified the case as A for the video part: a stray reflection in the device's lens.
