Sighting in Belvédère-Campomoro, August 22, 1979

France

Sighting on August 22, 1979 in Belvédère-Campomoro (France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

At around 10:45 p.m., two witnesses noticed a bright point of light in the sky that caught their attention. It first stayed still, at an estimated height of 100 to 150 metres above the golf course, then moved off to the west while growing dimmer. One of the witnesses then looked at it through binoculars and said they saw two yellow parallelograms. No other testimony about this phenomenon was collected.

The GEIPAN classified the case as B (probably identified). According to the investigation, the shapes described could result from aberrations in the binoculars, which are common with poor-quality binoculars when viewing a point of light. The phenomenon was most likely an aircraft lit by the sun.
