Sighting in Grosseto-Prugna, June 6, 2010

France

Sighting on June 6, 2010 in Grosseto-Prugna (France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

A witness was on their balcony shortly before one in the morning (12:37 a.m.) when they noticed something unusual. A white, rectangular light came from the mountains above Ajaccio and crossed the bay at very high speed. It followed a straight path and made no noise.

GEIPAN noted several points that fit together: the sighting took place on a Saturday-to-Sunday night, just after midnight; the light was white and not dazzling; no sound was heard; and the path matched the direction of the wind. These features point to a luminous balloon of the Thai lantern type. The case was classified B: the witness most likely saw a Thai lantern passing by.
