Sighting in Bizanos, July 4, 2015

Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on July 4, 2015 in Bizanos (Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11 p.m., a witness noticed a round, glowing, reddish-orange shape in the night sky and was intrigued by the way it moved. They heard no noise at any point during the observation, which lasted a few minutes. The object then went out suddenly. Only one witness account was collected for this case.

The investigation found that an orange ball or light moving across the night sky for a few minutes and then vanishing abruptly can be explained by a Thai lantern. The change of direction seen during the sighting fits with a wind of shifting direction, as recorded by nearby weather stations that day. The witness also mentioned a celebration taking place in the village that evening, which makes the lantern explanation even more likely. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable observation of a Thai lantern.
