Sighting in Brienne-la-Vieille, February 9, 2009

Aube, Grand Est, France

Sighting on February 9, 2009 in Brienne-la-Vieille (Aube, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably the planet Venus (class B).

What happened

Between 8 and 10 p.m., several people saw a light in the sky, and it frightened them. Only one account was collected, though. The witness described a large glow of several colors that stayed motionless in the sky. The observation lasted two hours, and no sound was heard. A similar sighting had already taken place four days earlier, on 5 February 2009, in the same town. A photo was taken, but its quality is very poor.

The GEIPAN considered the case to be of low strangeness and medium consistency, since the account was brief and the photo unusable. A bright object that stayed fixed for two hours fits an astronomical misidentification. Several matching details point to the planet Venus. Without concrete information, especially on the direction in which the sky was observed, a formal identification was not possible. The case was therefore classified B: probable astronomical misidentification, with Venus as the preferred hypothesis.
