Sighting in Callac, October 23, 2013

Côtes-d'Armor, Bretagne, France

Sighting on October 23, 2013 in Callac (Côtes-d'Armor, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an animal or natural object (bird, insect, pollen…) (class B).

What happened

At around 7:30 in the morning, a witness was surprised to see about ten points of light crossing the sky without a sound, in three successive waves. They firmly ruled out Chinese lanterns, fighter jets and any reflection of light. No other testimony was collected.

The investigation settled on a flock of migrating birds as the probable explanation. At that time of year, many birds migrate from north to south, and one of the main migration corridors passes east of the town. They usually fly at between 100 and 400 m, but in a headwind, as was the case that day, they fly lower and are easier to see at dawn or dusk. Brent geese migrate toward the Gulf of Morbihan during this period. Their plumage is mostly brown, black and white: at night, under the Moon, only the white part shows, and the yellowish tint the witness described matches the colour of reflected moonlight. The dark wings cannot be seen in the dark.

The only slightly odd element was the last light, which was brighter than the others. This detail was not part of the original observation or questionnaire and only came up during the investigation, three years later, so it may be a false memory. The case's consistency, moderate at first (a single witness, no photos or video), was strengthened by a cognitive interview. GEIPAN classed the case as B: probably several groups of Brent geese or other migrating birds.
