Sighting in Carcassonne, June 13, 2021

Between 11:35 and 11:40 pm, the witness was in their garden in the dark, looking at the moon through a telescope. They noticed a point of light moving in a straight line along a slightly curved path. The light was steady, red at first and then white. The witness described it as soft, without twinkling, strong and gradual, like a headlight. It was red as far as the west, then white, almost blue. They added that the spots of light might have been square or rectangular. Only one witness account was collected.

The radar map supplied by the Centre National des Opérations Aériennes showed three aircraft along the path the witness described, at the stated time, all between 25 and 50 km from the witness. The description and behaviour of the light matched the navigation lights of an aircraft. The investigation concluded that the witness had seen the closest of them, a CESSNA 525.

The change of colour was explained by the aircraft's lights: the witness first saw the red side light as the plane approached, then the white rear light as it flew away. As for the shape of the spots, the perception of the fixed red light on the left wingtip may have been altered by the four rectangular windows lined up along the side of the fuselage. The witness was not sure of this, as the word "maybe" suggests. This detail remains hard to explain but does not amount to a strong anomaly. GEIPAN classified the case as A: observation of an aircraft.
