Sighting in Chahaignes, September 13, 2009
Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, France
Sighting on September 13, 2009 in Chahaignes (Sarthe, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).
What happened
Two gendarmes on patrol noticed a dark, elongated mass hanging motionless above the town hall one evening. It had two wing-like parts and two red lights that flashed out of sync with each other. The object then began to move slowly, and the gendarmes heard a faint humming coming from it. The sighting lasted roughly between 9:30 and 10 pm.
As they left the village, the patrol saw the mass again, very low over the fields and apparently following the lie of the land. They carried on with their rounds, and the object was gone when they came back through the area. No other witness account was collected.
GEIPAN considered the case highly consistent, since the two witnesses were reliable and their gendarmerie report was very detailed. Its strangeness was rated as moderate, because the object had many features of a small civil airship: size, shape, lighting and the way it flew. What stands out is that it was flying at night, very low, taking significant risks and breaking regulations, and that no trace of such a craft was found in the region, at the sites where such machines are known. The case was classified B: a probable small airship, possibly remote-controlled and probably electrically powered.
