What happened

Children found the remains of an object lying in some brambles: an aluminium sphere made of two halves that fit together, attached to a parachute. They also picked up pieces of thin rubber from the surrounding area.

The GEIPAN investigation identified these items as the debris of a weather balloon. The case was therefore classified A, meaning fully identified: it was the recovery of a weather balloon.
