Sighting in Chauny, July 14, 2009

Aisne, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on July 14, 2009 in Chauny (Aisne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11:45 pm on the evening of 14 July, a witness noticed several red lights in the sky, arranged in a V shape. They moved at a steady speed, at a height of about 150 above the ground (the source does not give the unit). The witness heard no sound during the roughly 10 seconds the sighting lasted. The lights then vanished into a cloud.

Local press reported many similar sightings at the time. GEIPAN classified the case as B: the witness probably saw flying lanterns, which were very popular then, especially during festive events.
