Sighting in Espéraza, December 22, 2013

Aude, Occitanie, France

Sighting on December 22, 2013 in Espéraza (Aude, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At about 1:30 a.m., a witness standing in their doorway saw two very bright, vivid orange balls go by silently. They moved in a straight line from south to north. A third ball, similar to the first two, then passed over the house before climbing quickly. The witness went up to the high ground of the village to keep watching, but did not see the phenomenon again.

The investigation noted that the orange glowing balls crossed the sky in the same direction as the wind, which was blowing from the south. This, together with the fact that the sighting took place on a Saturday-to-Sunday night, strongly suggested Thai lanterns, probably released at the end of a party in the southern part of the town. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
