Sighting in Espira-de-l'Agly, March 1, 2025

At about 9:20 pm, the witness stepped outside with their dogs and watched the sky for several minutes. They saw what looked like an aerial ballet of light beams, along with two white discs, all happening in the same spot. The beams were milky white and radiated from a very white, round central point in a fan shape, later lining up parallel to one another.

The case has good consistency: there was a single witness, but many photos and videos of the event were found online. The investigation established that, 8 km away in the direction of the sighting, there is a stadium where a rugby match was being played that evening, with an especially striking sound-and-light show. The phenomenon came from the beams of robotic projectors (skytracers) reflecting off clouds and haze. Smoke from flares and fireworks rose into the air and acted as a screen, at times making parts of the beams visible. Scattered clouds boosted the brightness at the ends of the beams, producing white discs against them, as photos from another witness show. A video filmed by a spectator inside the stadium shows these fast fan-shaped effects. Given the distance, however, the witness could not have heard the sound part of the show.

GEIPAN classed the case as A: reflections of spotlights on clouds. The witness may see the phenomenon again at future night matches, if the same company provides the show and the sky is hazy or cloudy, or the smoke forms a suitable screen.
