Sighting in Firminy, August 30, 1997

Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on August 30, 1997 in Firminy (Loire, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

Around midnight, during the night of 29 to 30 August 1997, several witnesses were alerted by the unusual behavior of the animals on the farm. They went to see what was happening and noticed a white, rounded glow. It had an outer hoop, and its inside was studded with small circles of light. Beams of light shone from it toward the ground, and the whole thing moved while spinning on itself.

At 2 a.m., as the witnesses were about to go to bed, the phenomenon was still there.

Nothing in the investigation could confirm it, but the observation was most likely the reflection on the clouds of an advertising laser projector, which can operate within a radius of 8 to 10 km. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B, probably identified.
