Sighting in Fontaines, April 10, 2014

Saône-et-Loire, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on April 10, 2014 in Fontaines (Saône-et-Loire, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

At around 6 p.m., a witness noticed a bright object hanging motionless in the sky to the west. They watched it for about thirty seconds, after which it vanished instantly. Only one witness account was collected.

GEIPAN noted that a bright object seen in the west late in the afternoon is consistent with sunlight reflecting off an aircraft or a balloon. If it was an aircraft, it would have been a long way off, more than 50 km away, and heading in a direction close to the witness's line of sight. The sudden disappearance was probably due to a change in the object's orientation relative to the sun: the reflection would have stopped, but not the object itself. The case, considered of little strangeness, was classified B: probable reflection of the setting sun on a distant, high-altitude aircraft, most likely flight EZY434P according to Gasperflights.
