Sighting in Fort-Mardyck, July 23, 2019
Nord, Hauts-de-France, France
Sighting on July 23, 2019 in Fort-Mardyck (Nord, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably the International Space Station (ISS) (class B).
What happened
Between 10 and 11 p.m., the witness was stargazing in their garden when a "glow" passed overhead and then vanished. It stayed visible for a few minutes. During that time, the witness went to fetch their phone to film it. Only one other account supports this one, and the video is of very little use.
The phenomenon crossed almost the whole sky in a straight line. It was round, white, fairly bright and steady, with no flashing.
The investigation set aside an aircraft, because the light did not flash and because of the details the witness gave. A Chinese lantern was also ruled out: the wind blew against the direction of travel at an average of 16 to 23 km/h, and the white colour and lack of flashing did not fit either. GEIPAN considers the most likely explanation to be a pass of the International Space Station (ISS) between 10:08 and 10:18 p.m. Its path that evening resembled the one described, and the duration, although not an exact match, can be accounted for by the approximations in the account. The case is classified B: probable sighting of the ISS.
