Sighting in Istres, September 23, 1977

Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on September 23, 1977 in Istres (Bouches-du-Rhône, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Around midnight, a witness who was out walking their dog noticed two circular craft in the sky. They remained in view for about a minute. The underside of each was a bright white, while the upper part looked darker. They were moving in a northwest-to-southeast direction and made no noise at all.

The two craft then began to turn, climbed at high speed and disappeared. That night, the control tower at the Istres air base picked up no unexpected radar echo. No other witness account was collected. GEIPAN classified the case as C, meaning there was insufficient data; the investigation's conclusion was simply the observation of two craft passing by.
