Sighting in L'Isle-sur-Serein, September 13, 1977

Yonne, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on September 13, 1977 in L'Isle-sur-Serein (Yonne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A press article reported that three witnesses had seen a "UFO", and an investigation was opened as a result. The gendarmerie managed to locate one of them. This witness stated that at around 9:30 p.m. on 13 September 1977 they saw a reddish glow moving from north to south. No sound was heard during the sighting, and the phenomenon left no trail along its path.

The second witness could never be found. The third witness was interviewed, but their account concerned a different event: on 7 September 1977, at around 7 in the morning, they had seen a white, luminous, oval object in the clouds. No other testimony about the 13 September phenomenon was collected.

The GEIPAN concluded that this was the observation of a luminous phenomenon in motion. As the available data were insufficient to go further, the case was classified C.
