Sighting in La Charité-sur-Loire, December 2, 2023

Nièvre, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on December 2, 2023 in La Charité-sur-Loire (Nièvre, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably one or more satellites (class B).

What happened

From the garden of their home, the main witness and, occasionally, their spouse repeatedly saw the same kind of phenomenon in the night sky: brief flashes of white light, point-like and motionless. Only two sightings, made on the evening of 2 December 2023, were examined, because they are the only ones for which the exact date and time are known. There was a single account and no image of the phenomenon, so the case's consistency was rated as medium, even though two people were present. Of the witness's many observations, only those of that date are well documented.

The description matches satellite flashes. A detailed reconstruction of satellite passes showed that one satellite could match the position of the first phenomenon, which was pinpointed using the nearby planet Jupiter as a landmark. For the second, the position the witness gave was too imprecise to establish which of the many satellites in the sky near the zenith that evening caused it, or whether several did. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable observation of satellite flashes.
