Sighting in Landévant, April 13, 2012

Morbihan, Bretagne, France

Sighting on April 13, 2012 in Landévant (Morbihan, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the International Space Station (ISS) (class A).

What happened

At around 9:34 p.m., a witness noticed a white luminous object crossing the sky in silence and could not tell what it was. They described its path as curved. In their first account they had made an error about the orientation of what they saw, which was corrected afterwards.

The GEIPAN investigation concluded with certainty that the witness had seen the International Space Station (ISS), which was visible between 9:34 and 9:37 p.m. that evening. The case showed low strangeness and good consistency despite the orientation error. The curved path came from a misperception of an orbit that is in fact nearly circular: only satellites passing through the zenith give the impression of a straight path. GEIPAN classified the case as A, a certain observation of the ISS.
