Sighting in Larmor-Baden, August 25, 2009

Morbihan, Bretagne, France

Sighting on August 25, 2009 in Larmor-Baden (Morbihan, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11 p.m., two people out for a walk noticed two reddish-orange balls hanging motionless just above the treetops. The sighting lasted about five minutes, and no sound was heard throughout. A few minutes later, one of the witnesses had returned home and saw that the balls were no longer there.

GEIPAN classified the case as B, probably identified. Two steady reddish-orange lights match what Thai lanterns would look like. Another account, published in the local press, described a similar sighting the same evening at Arzon. The paths reported in both cases and the descriptions are alike, which supports the conclusion that all these sightings were most likely flying lanterns.
