Sighting in Lassay-les-Châteaux, August 19, 1990

Mayenne, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on August 19, 1990 in Lassay-les-Châteaux (Mayenne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably pyrotechnics (fireworks, flares…) (class B).

What happened

At about 10:45 p.m., the witness was in a farmyard when they noticed a green oval shape above a building. It stayed in view for about a minute. The witness and their spouse then watched red-orange glows above the cowshed from their home for five minutes. The witness called the gendarmerie, but the phenomenon was gone by the time the gendarmes arrived.

In October 1990, the gendarmes ran several tests, including one using low-power firework rockets. The witness did not recognise what they had seen, but the conditions were not comparable, since they knew beforehand what they were about to see. The investigation also established that a firework display had been held that same evening at Charchigné, in the direction of the sighting and within the same time window. It may have been the source of what the witness saw. The firework hypothesis remained the preferred one, and the following year the gendarmes proposed going back to the farm to observe the effects of such a display. GEIPAN classified the case as B, a probable firework display.
