Sighting in Le Boulou, August 24, 2013

Pyrénées-Orientales, Occitanie, France

Sighting on August 24, 2013 in Le Boulou (Pyrénées-Orientales, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 10 p.m., some witnesses were taking photographs when they noticed a sphere to the left of the Moon. One of them took a picture and only afterwards discovered a second sphere on it. In the photo, the Moon appears as a small white gibbous disc, which matches the Stellarium chart. The two large bright discs on the left are photographic artefacts, sometimes called "orbs": they are caused by dust or water droplets very close to the lens, lit up by the flash.

These artefacts do not, however, account for the second large bright ball that the witness had seen with their own eyes to the left of the Moon. The investigation put forward several possibilities without being able to settle on one: a lunar halo, a stadium floodlight (identified from a Google photo), or some other phenomenon. Because of this uncertainty, and since the photograph provided no proof, GEIPAN classified the case as C, for lack of information.
