Sighting in Le Temple-sur-Lot, May 17, 2009

Lot-et-Garonne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on May 17, 2009 in Le Temple-sur-Lot (Lot-et-Garonne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 1 a.m., two witnesses noticed about ten orange points of light in the sky. The lights seemed to come from a single spot and all moved slowly and silently toward Grange-sur-Lot, then vanished at the horizon.

One of the witnesses gave the GEIPAN several photographs, meant to recreate the scene and show where the lights were positioned. The video recording, however, was never passed on to the GEIPAN. No other witness account was collected.

The case had a relatively low degree of strangeness, but the detailed testimony made it highly consistent. The observation had all the hallmarks of a mistaken sighting of a release of Thai lanterns. However, there was no precise weather data for the observation site and no cross-checking against regional records, so the investigation could not reach a firm conclusion. The case was classified C: there was not enough information to confirm the lantern hypothesis.
