Sighting in Les Petites-Loges, November 8, 2022
Marne, Grand Est, France
Sighting on November 8, 2022 in Les Petites-Loges (Marne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).
What happened
At around 7:45 in the morning, a witness driving along a departmental road saw a very bright point of light move quickly across the sky toward the west. It left no trail behind it, and then it vanished. The sighting lasted only one to two seconds, too short for a photo or video to be taken. No other account was collected.
The investigation concluded that the witness had seen a small meteor entering the atmosphere, similar to a shooting star. Three points support this: the appearance of the phenomenon (color, brightness) matches that of a meteor, the observation was very brief, and the path was a straight line. The lack of any report to the IMO (International Meteor Organization) is understandable, since a modest meteor is seen by few people and is not very spectacular, so it is rarely reported. Likewise, the trigger threshold of automated cameras probably explains why nothing was recorded at that time. The witness, who had thought of a fireball, found the absence of a trail odd, but not every meteor produces one: depending on its size, its angle of entry and the perspective created by the witness's position, the trail may be absent or invisible to the naked eye. GEIPAN classified the case as A: observation of a meteor.
