Sighting in Loudéac, January 31, 2015

Côtes-d'Armor, Bretagne, France

Sighting on January 31, 2015 in Loudéac (Côtes-d'Armor, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a drone (class B).

What happened

At around 5:45 pm, two children, a brother and sister, were in separate rooms of their home. Through the window, both saw the same thing: a grey, oval object with coloured lights, moving at low altitude very close to the house. A few seconds apart, each went to tell their mother what they had seen. Their father then filled in the questionnaire for both witnesses, and each child made a separate drawing of the sighting. No other witness came forward.

An investigation was carried out on site. The accounts were very short but were judged reliable, and fairly independent of each other since the children were not in the same room. The sighting was considered not very strange.

During the neighbourhood inquiry on 25 April 2015, investigators met a drone pilot. Their account led to the conclusion that the object was a drone seen edge-on, which explains the flat, oval shape, and fitted with multicoloured LEDs. The children had probably misjudged the object's distance and size. The case was classified B, a very probable sighting of a drone lit by LEDs. It would have been classified A if the drone's owner had been able to confirm flying it on 31 January 2015.
