Sighting in Marciac, February 9, 2022

Gers, Occitanie, France

Sighting on February 9, 2022 in Marciac (Gers, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

At around 7:45 p.m., a person driving a car was intrigued by a coloured luminous phenomenon made up of glowing balls. It moved from west to east along a straight, roughly horizontal path that sloped slightly downward. The witness described a spherical shape, a green and yellow colour and strong brightness. They then noticed a trail in the sky, in the direction the phenomenon had gone. They were the only witness, and there is no photo or video.

The account was fairly complete, but some doubt remained about the exact time, and the witness did not reply to GEIPAN's request for clarification. The description is fairly consistent with an atmospheric re-entry, either natural or artificial. The CNES Space Operations Surveillance Centre reported that no artificial re-entry had taken place over France at that time. However, the FRIPON camera at the Dax station had recorded a bolide at 8:05 p.m. local time, in a direction and on a trajectory consistent with the sighting. The witness may have overestimated the duration, since a bolide visible for two to three minutes would be exceptional. The time they gave, "around 7:45 p.m.", may also have been closer to 8:05 p.m. The case was classified B: probable sighting of a bolide.
