Sighting in Mauron, December 23, 1995
Morbihan, Bretagne, France
Sighting on December 23, 1995 in Mauron (Morbihan, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).
What happened
At around 2 a.m., a witness and a friend saw an object they described as huge, round and saucer-shaped, not very high above the ground. Beneath it, lights could be seen all around. It turned slowly on its own axis and moved back and forth above a house, then came closer to the witness and stopped above a field. No sound was heard during the whole sighting. Frightened, the witness went back indoors, looked out of a window and found that the object was gone. Only one witness account was collected.
GEIPAN concluded that the phenomenon was probably the beam of a discotheque laser (a "sky tracker") projected onto the low cloud layer present that night. The description matches how these lasers look and behave: they can rotate, move in circles, sweep back and forth or stop. Whether beams are visible depends on the particles suspended between the ground and the cloud base, but no information on this was available for the night in question. The house the witness mentioned lay in the direction of a discotheque, open since at least 1993, a little further away. Sky trackers already existed in 1995, and the sighting took place on a weekend night, when discotheques are most active. A single discotheque can produce its effects in several places within a 10 to 20 km radius. The case, previously classified D, was re-examined and classified B: probable sky rose.
