Sighting in Menglon, May 23, 2009
Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
Sighting on May 23, 2009 in Menglon (Drôme, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
The witness was on holiday with their family when, one Saturday, they all saw a black, rectangular object moving across their field of view. According to the case conclusion, the object was spinning on itself while gaining altitude, and it then disappeared by moving away upward.
The witness contacted the GEIPAN by email at the end of February 2010, the day after a programme aired on TF1, several months after the event. They later returned the Questionnaire Terrestre, together with a location plan showing the object's trajectory and a drawing of its shape, almost a year after the sighting.
The case rests on a single report with no photograph, and its features were only slightly strange and not very substantial. The phenomenon was probably a balloon, though one of a very unusual shape. Because no reliable weather data was available, it could not be checked whether the object's movement was consistent with the wind. The GEIPAN therefore classified the case as C, insufficient data.
