Sighting in Meursault, November 1, 2005

Côte-d'Or, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on November 1, 2005 in Meursault (Côte-d'Or, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a planet (class B).

What happened

On 1 November 2005, between 6:25 and 6:45 pm, several witnesses noticed a very bright white ball in the sky, with a red dot on each side. It moved very slowly toward the southwest, silently and without changing direction. Two weeks later, the same person made an identical observation. The local gendarmerie brigade went to the site and found a star there.

The investigation also looked at the first sighting. The sky chart for that time shows a group of conjunctions involving Venus, Mercury, Uranus and Antares, with Venus particularly bright (magnitude -3). It is therefore very likely that the witness saw these planets and stars, which were beginning to shine in the sunset sky. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable astronomical observations.
