Sighting in Narcy, August 23, 2016

Nièvre, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on August 23, 2016 in Narcy (Nièvre, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At about 10 a.m., a witness was working on a roof when the roofer pointed out a very bright object in a clear sky. The object was moving toward them when it changed direction. No sound was heard, and the object then disappeared at the horizon. Only one witness account was collected. The witness felt the object was being carried by the wind, "a bit like a balloon in the wind," moving at an uneven speed.

The investigation found that the change of direction, the only odd feature, could be explained by the very changeable wind that day, especially around 10 a.m., as shown by weather records from nearby stations. The impression of high speed is necessarily subjective, since the witness did not recognise the object and could not judge its distance. The object was probably round, otherwise its tumbling in the wind would have produced flickering light. It could have been a child's balloon. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable observation of an object carried by the wind, in particular a child's balloon.
