Sighting in Neulliac, January 2, 2013

Morbihan, Bretagne, France

Sighting on January 2, 2013 in Neulliac (Morbihan, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Between 9:10 and 9:30 pm, a motorist noticed several orange balls in the sky and was intrigued by them. They drifted slowly from south to north, and the sighting lasted a few minutes.

GEIPAN found that this description is typical of Thai lanterns, especially as the end-of-year holiday period is a common time for releasing them. At Vannes the wind was light and blew from the west. Inland it was probably weaker and more southerly, as the southerly wind recorded at Rennes suggests, which fits with a movement toward the north. The case was classified B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns passing by.
