Sighting in Nissan-lez-Enserune, August 4, 2013

Hérault, Occitanie, France

Sighting on August 4, 2013 in Nissan-lez-Enserune (Hérault, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was one or more satellites (class A).

What happened

At 10:12 p.m. on an August evening, a couple saw a whitish point of light cross the night sky. It moved in a straight line at about the speed of an airliner, but it did not blink and made no sound. One of the two witnesses took two photographs with a camera and was surprised by what appeared when they enlarged the images on their computer. Only one witness account was collected.

The investigation found that the strangeness of the case came from the photograph, not from what the witness had seen directly. The witness themselves acknowledged that the object seen with the naked eye was probably a satellite. At the time given, several satellites did pass overhead, travelling from the southwest toward the northeast, according to the Callsky website. Because photographs can produce many artefacts, GEIPAN no longer examines anomalies that appear only in photos and were not seen by eye, so it ruled on the visual sighting alone. It classified the case as A: the passage of a satellite.
