Sighting in Noyarey, November 19, 2011

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on November 19, 2011 in Noyarey (Isère, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

From home, a witness saw several yellow-orange points of light pass over the house at 22:08. They followed a straight path from the southeast to the northwest. The witness heard no sound at any point during the sighting. In the end the lights disappeared, climbing higher and moving off at very high speed.

The description immediately suggested Thai lanterns to the investigators. According to the weather data, the wind was blowing from the southeast toward the northwest, which matches the direction of travel. The day (a Saturday evening) and the time are also typical circumstances for lantern releases. No attempt was made to find a possible release site, such as a wedding or a party. GEIPAN classified the case as B: the witness probably saw Thai lanterns drifting past.
