Sighting in Perpignan, July 30, 2020

Pyrénées-Orientales, Occitanie, France

Sighting on July 30, 2020 in Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an animal or natural object (bird, insect, pollen…) (class A).

What happened

At about 4:38 in the morning, the witness was in their garden when they saw several "lights" or "luminous circles" crossing the sky in a V formation. The group moved toward the southeast, and no particular noise was heard. This was the only testimony collected. What struck the witness as strange was the luminous look of the circles arranged in a V.

The investigation compared this description with a passage of migratory birds. The witness was only 5 km from the Étang de Saint-Nazaire, an important site for bird observation. The pond lies on a major migratory route and is the first stopover for many birds after they cross the Pyrenees. The head of the Groupe Ornithologique du Roussillon, contacted by email, said it was probably a flight of white storks, which is typical of that place and time of year. In an exchange with the GEIPAN, the witness placed the "strange" sightings to the east or southeast, which, from their home, corresponds to the area of the pond. The GEIPAN concluded that the witness had seen a flight of migratory birds and classified the case A (identified).
