Sighting in Peyriac-de-Mer, August 2004
Aude, Occitanie, France
Sighting in August 2004 in Peyriac-de-Mer (Aude, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
The witness gave an account in May 2015 of an old sighting, probably from July or August 2004. Around 1:40 pm, they were driving on the D6009 past Prat-de-Cest when a yellow circular object appeared at low altitude in the left corner of the windshield. They stopped and saw, from the side, a yellow disc cross the road and move toward the motorway, less than a metre above green vines, which did not stir.
At the motorway, the object rose vertically, then went back to a horizontal path, passing over the cars and then over an embankment. The embankment then hid it from the witness's view. The object seemed to come from the Doule ponds to the east and head west. No particular noise was noticed. No other testimony was collected.
GEIPAN rated the strangeness as medium to high, because of the phenomenon's closeness and its atypical behaviour. The case's consistency is low: there is a single witness, the memories are old, and the exact date is unknown, which rules out any weather check. Ball lightning, the only hypothesis considered, was not well enough supported to be retained. The case was classified C because the date and corroborating information are missing.
