Sighting in Plaisance-du-Touch, July 4, 2009

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on July 4, 2009 in Plaisance-du-Touch (Haute-Garonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

On a Saturday evening, at around 11:40 pm, the witness was at home when they saw a luminous disc cross the sky. The phenomenon lasted only two to three seconds and made no noise at all. The object moved in a straight line at very high speed, along a path running between Bordeaux and Perpignan. No other witness account was collected.

GEIPAN noted that a very bright disc crossing the sky in a few seconds is consistent with the atmospheric entry of a meteoroid (meteorite). However, the witness did not notice the green or yellow trail that would normally be expected in such cases. The investigation suggested that the witness's night vision may not have been very good. The case was classed B: probable observation of a meteoroid entering the atmosphere.
