Sighting in Pleine-Fougères, March 1990

Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne, France

Sighting in March 1990 in Pleine-Fougères (Ille-et-Vilaine, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).

What happened

A farmer noticed a circle of yellowed grass in one of their pastures, about 8 metres across. The discoloured band was between 15 and 25 cm wide. A few weeks later, the same thing turned up on another owner's land, so several rings of dried grass were found in two fields.

The SEPRA visited the site, and soil analyses were carried out by the agricultural engineering school in Rennes. They showed that the circles were caused by a fungus, producing the well-known "fairy ring" (called a "witch's ring" in French), in this case a particularly large one. The phenomenon was fully identified, and GEIPAN classified the case as A.
