Sighting in Pontarlier, April 9, 2009

Doubs, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on April 9, 2009 in Pontarlier (Doubs, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

In the early afternoon, four people at an airfield noticed several white, spherical objects moving slowly across the sky. No sound was heard during the sighting, and the objects were gradually lost from view.

The investigation drew on the accounts of two of these witnesses. It did not arrive at a formal explanation. Scientific balloons were nonetheless considered the most likely answer, even though the Swiss weather services and laboratories did not confirm this. The case was classified B, meaning probably identified.
